BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Alessandro Belgiojoso was born in 1963, in Milan. He lives and works in Italy and abroad. In 2005 he held the exhibition Mental Landscapes at the Studio Visconti Gallery, in Milan.

Since 2006 his work has focused on the concept of boundary and the urge to overstep its limits, exploring socio-cultural comparisons and the ongoing dialogue between different cultures and geo-political meanings. In 2007 at Forma Foto, Milan, he exhibited a body of work taken in North and South Korea, and presented his book Korea, an Impossible Journey? Thanks to the support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this project managed to cross the otherwise impenetrable border between the two Koreas, and involved exhibitions and presentations of the book in Pyongyang (North Korea), Seoul, Incheon and Daegu (South Korea) in the North Korean Embassy in Rome in 2008 and today in the South Koran Conulate in Milan. The project was key to the Korean Pavillion, winner of the Golden Lion at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale. This long term project is still in progress.

The idea and development of Earth & Light from Gurfa Cave to Roden Crater project began in 2004 while the photographer was working in Kamchatcka, where he was engaged in the study of the sky vault. The tholos of the Gurfa, with its central oculus in the ceiling, is carried through his work as a mediating factor between the sky and the earth, revealing the Gurfa complex's close links with the Roden Crater of James Turrell. The exhibition is today part of the collection of the Museum of Photography Alia (Palermo, Sicily).

In 2011 the Redentore Series on Venice was exhibited in the Museo della Fotografia of Busto Arsizio, after being exhibited from Korea to the US where it has been was awarded with first price at the Washington FotoDC.

In 2012 he published with Hermès the photographic book Inafferrabile Milano and has since worked on different aspect of the city, architecture, design and social aspects with a very inner view of his city where he is granted a special access. In 2017 he published ADSI 12 on the rural architecture for the Italian Historic Houses Association and InLombardy for the Lombardia Region. He exhibited for the Italian Friends of TCF Foundation a project on Pakistan at the Museo Diocesano Milan.

He collaborates with major Italian Architectural magazines.

Alessandro Belgiojoso è nato a Milano nel 1963. Vive e lavora tra l’Italia e l’estero.

Nel 2005 espone allo Studio Visconti di Milano la mostra Paesaggi Mentali.

Dal 2006 focalizza il suo lavoro su tematiche relative al concetto di confine e la sua transitabilità, intesa sia nella dimensione socio-culturale del confronto e dialogo tra le diversità, sia nella sua accezione geopolitica.

Nel 2007 presenta il libro Corea, un viaggio impossibile?presso Forma, Milano, dove tiene una mostra di fotografie scattate nel Nord e nel Sud della Corea. Questo progetto di lungo termine, grazie all’appoggio del Ministero degli Esteri, ha varcato il confine ermetico tra le due Coree con mostre e presentazioni del libro fotografico sia a Pyongyang (Corea del Nord), sia a Seoul, Incheon e Daegu (Corea del Sud). Il progetto ha preso stato parte al Padiglione della Corea, vincitore del Leone d’Oro alla Biennale di Architettura 2014.

Nel 2009 espone alla Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Palermo una mostra di fotografie e video Terra e Lucedalla Gurfa al Roden Crater che collega il lavoro del fotografo sull’oculusdella Gurfa al progetto trentennale di James Turrell. La mostra è oggi collezione permanente del Museo della Fotografia di Alia (Palermo).

Nell’ottobre 2011 il lavoro sulla festa del Redentore a Venezia è stato esposto al Museo della Fotografia di Busto Arsizio, dopo varie esposizioni, dalla Corea agli USA, dove ha vinto il premio Fotoweek DC nel 2011.

Nel 2012 pubblica per Hermès e i tipi di Silvana Editoriale la monografia fotografica Inafferrabile Milano. Nel 2017 ha pubblciato ADSI 12 per l’Associazione Dimore Storiche Italiane e InLombardy per Regione Lombardia.  

Nel 2017 ha esposto al Museo Diocesano di Milano assieme ad Albertina d’Urso una mostra sul lavoro svolto per The Citizen Foundation in Pakistan.
